Review

Samsung’s Galaxy Ring Works Best Beside a Galaxy Phone

The Galaxy Ring only works with Android phones, because Samsung's setup app, Galaxy Wearable, needs Android 11 or later. The quick start guide in the box also says you must have a Samsung account to use the ring. Two of its daily insights go further and need a Samsung Galaxy phone with Galaxy AI.

That settles the choice for iPhone owners comparing it with Oura's Ring 5, which works with an iPhone and comes with a paid membership. Every figure here is Samsung's, from its US product page and that quick start guide. No independent test of the ring's sensors or battery stands behind them in this review.

None of the conditions in Samsung's feature footnotes is a paid plan.

How we reviewed it

Basis
Research-based: assessed from the manufacturer’s published specifications, documentation and the independent sources listed at the end. We have not tested this unit ourselves; any measurement quoted belongs to the cited source.
Method

Samsung's US Galaxy Ring page and its footnotes supplied the battery rating by size, the water ratings Samsung advertises, and the features that need a Galaxy AI phone. The quick start guide that ships in the box (Rev 1.2, 2025) gave the Android requirement, the IP68 depth, the matching case model for each ring size, the wearing and cleaning rules and the one-year warranty. Best Buy's listing confirmed the sizing-kit-first purchase and that the ring was on sale on October 24, 2026. Owner reports on Samsung's store are described as a pattern in the battery section.

Evidence

Battery, water and feature figures are Samsung's ratings. The comparison of the two water ratings and the reading of the battery footnote are our own analysis of Samsung's documents.

Limitations

We have no independent measurement of this ring's battery life, sleep staging or heart rate accuracy. Samsung's battery footnote covers sizes 5 to 13 and does not say how long the two sizes added since then last. This assessment covers the US Galaxy Ring sold as model SM-Q500 and its sibling sizes.

Android only, and two insights that want a Galaxy phone

Not rated · Evidence: maker figures only

The ring pairs through Galaxy Wearable, which needs Android 11 or later, and the quick start guide says a Samsung account is required. There's no iPhone app. Samsung's product page goes a step further and says the account must be registered on your Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

The basics run through the free Samsung Health app: sleep with snore detection, heart rate, skin temperature at night and cycle tracking. Two features are tied to newer Samsung hardware. Energy Score, the morning readiness number, and Wellness Tips both need a compatible Samsung Galaxy AI phone. So does the double pinch that takes a photo or dismisses an alarm, which Samsung lists under its Galaxy devices.

Samsung's footnotes set three kinds of condition: a compatible phone, the Samsung Health app and a Samsung account. A monthly fee isn't one of them, and that's the clearest difference from Oura's membership model. Auto workout detection covers walking and running only, so a bike ride or a weights session has to be started by hand in Samsung Health.

Six days or seven, depending on your size

Not rated · Evidence: maker figures only

Samsung's page promises a seven-day charge, and up to 14 days away from an outlet once you count a full charging case. The footnote limits the seven days to sizes 12 and 13. Every smaller size is rated for up to six. Samsung has since added two sizes to its sizing kit, and the footnote doesn't say where they fall.

The case charges the ring first and then itself, according to the quick start guide. Each ring size has its own case model, so a spare or replacement case has to match your size. Samsung's support replies on its store say the ring keeps its sensors running when it's off your finger and out of the case, so put it back in the case when you take it off. They also say wearing a Galaxy Watch alongside it stretches the ring's battery, because the two stop duplicating some tracking.

The longer question is the battery's life in years. Owner reviews on Samsung's store include a run describing battery life falling sharply within the first year or so, and Samsung's replies point to a one-year limited warranty. Samsung Care+ is sold as an add-on for longer cover.

IP68 in the box, 10ATM on the web page

Not rated · Evidence: conflicting sources
Galaxy Ring in Titanium Silver seen face-on as a circle against a pale green backdrop

The quick start guide in the box rates the ring IP68: dust-tight, and tested for submersion in up to 5 feet of fresh water for 30 minutes. Samsung's web page adds a 10ATM classification. It defines that as water down to 100 m for 10 minutes. The same page puts the IP68 depth at 6 feet, again for 30 minutes.

That gives one IP68 rating two depths, and only the web page mentions 10ATM. Plan on the guide's version, the narrower of the two. Its test used fresh water, so laps in a chlorinated pool or a day in the sea go beyond what it describes. Samsung's page asks you to rinse off residue and dry the ring after it gets wet.

The guide also rules out an ultrasonic cleaner, which it says can permanently damage the ring.

Sizing kit first, and the mark that faces your palm

Samsung and Best Buy both sell the ring size-first: a kit of sample rings arrives before the ring itself. Samsung asks you to wear a sample for at least 24 hours before you confirm the size.

Wear it with the raised orientation mark facing your palm, on a finger where it is neither tight nor loose, the quick start guide says. It also warns against wearing another ring right next to it, since the two can scratch each other. The titanium comes in matte black, matte silver and a glossy gold, and Samsung says the concave outer face helps it resist scratches.

Final verdict

Samsung Galaxy Ring, SM-Q500 (size 10), Titanium Silver, US version
RecommendationConsider if you carry a Galaxy phone and add Samsung Care+ to cover the battery past the one-year warranty

This review gives no score out of 10, because no section rests on a measurement by an independent body. The recommendation and the written verdict stand on their own.

Pros

  • No subscription
  • Sleep, heart rate and skin temperature tracking through the free Samsung Health app
  • A charging case that refills the ring away from an outlet
  • A sizing kit with day-long sample rings before you buy

Cons

  • No iPhone support
  • Energy Score and Wellness Tips need a Galaxy AI phone
  • The seven-day battery rating covers only the two largest original sizes
  • Two different water depths for the same IP68 rating
  • A one-year warranty, with owner reports of fading batteries

Conclusion

On a Galaxy phone with Galaxy AI, the Galaxy Ring gives you everything Samsung advertises with nothing to pay each month. The two ratings worth reading closely are the battery footnote, which most sizes fall outside, and the water depth, where the box is stricter than the web page. Given the owner reports of fading batteries and a warranty that runs one year, price Samsung Care+ before you check out.

Our take

The one-year warranty is the term to weigh hardest, because owner reviews on Samsung's store describe battery life fading within about a year. It is a buy only with Samsung Care+ added.

Best for
  • Galaxy phone owners
  • Sleep trackers who won't pay a monthly fee
  • People who find a watch too bulky to keep on in bed every night
Consider an alternative if
  • You use an iPhone
  • You plan to swim laps with it on your finger

Questions readers ask

Does the Galaxy Ring work with an iPhone?

No. Samsung's Galaxy Wearable app, which sets up the ring, needs an Android phone running Android 11 or later, and the ring also needs a Samsung account.

Do you need a subscription for the Galaxy Ring?

Samsung's feature conditions name a compatible phone, the Samsung Health app and a Samsung account, and none of them is a paid plan. Energy Score and Wellness Tips also need a compatible Galaxy AI phone.
