Apple Watch Series 12 Review: Live Rewind Needs an iPhone 16

Is an Apple Watch Series 12 worth buying for someone who already wears a Series 11? Apple kept the price, the design and the 24-hour battery rating, and changed the heart sensor, the chip and the microphone. The watch sits between Apple's SE 3 and Ultra 4 and replaces the Series 11, which shares its body.

Tom's Guide wore one for a week against a Garmin chest strap, and Macworld ran two battery cycles and logged three spontaneous resets in a single day. Those tests, Apple's specifications and its footnotes are the evidence behind this assessment.

For an owner of an iPhone 11 to iPhone 15, Apple's footnotes say the new microphone's headline features will not run at all, which leaves the heart sensor as the reason to upgrade.

Quick verdict

Apple Watch Series 12 (GPS), 42 mm aluminum case, watchOS 27
6.8/10
Editorial ratingFairWeighted average of 4 rated sections.

For an iPhone owner coming from a Series 8 or older, the Series 12 is a sound upgrade, because the new sensor reads heart rate every five seconds all day. Live Rewind and Siri Recap need an iPhone 16 or later, so on an older phone the new microphone has little to do.

Strengths

  • Heart rate every five seconds
  • Readiness score from overnight vitals, sleep and training load
  • Works with phones back to the iPhone 11, so the sensor and Readiness need no new phone

Weaknesses

  • Live Rewind and Siri Recap need an iPhone 16 or later and are still a beta
  • Fast charging fell well short of Apple's claim in Macworld's timed tests
  • Early units reset themselves until watchOS 27.0.1

How we reviewed it

Basis
Research-based: assessed from the manufacturer’s published specifications, documentation and the independent sources listed at the end. We have not tested this unit ourselves; any measurement quoted belongs to the cited source.
Method

The compatibility section is built from Apple's specification footnotes, which set the iPhone and language requirements for the watch and for Audio Intelligence, with Tom's Guide and Macworld describing how Live Rewind signals that it is listening. The heart section uses Apple's description of the new sensor and Readiness, and Tom's Guide's week against a Garmin chest strap. Battery and charging set Apple's test conditions against Macworld's two measured cycles and its timed charges. The reliability section draws on Macworld's resets, Notebookcheck's reports on watchOS 27.0.1 and skin irritation, and iPhone in Canada's and T3's comparisons with the Series 11.

Evidence

Tom's Guide compared the heart sensor with a Garmin chest strap on runs during a week of wear. Macworld measured two battery cycles and timed fast charging. Feature availability, ratings and test conditions are Apple's.

Limitations

No lab has published a controlled accuracy test of the new heart sensor, and Tom's Guide's comparison covers one wearer. Live Rewind and Siri Recap were not available to any reviewer, because Apple ships them in beta in late 2026. Readiness needs a week of nights before it shows a score, and Tom's Guide had not received one at publication.

Which iPhones get Live Rewind and Siri Recap

The watch itself pairs with an iPhone 11 or later, including the second-generation iPhone SE, running iOS 27. The features that explain its new microphone ask for much more. According to Apple's specification footnotes, Live Rewind and Siri Recap need an Apple Intelligence iPhone 16 or later, excluding the iPhone 16e, arrive as a beta in late 2026, start in English and will not be available in the EU at first. Sound Recognition and the faster Shazam are the parts of Audio Intelligence that do not carry the iPhone 16 condition.

Live Rewind shows a transcript of the last 15 seconds around you when you press the Digital Crown twice. Tom's Guide reports that it plays a chime even when the watch is on silent and shows a microphone indicator on screen, and Macworld adds that the sound cannot be turned off. California's governor vetoed a bill that would have made such indicators mandatory on wearable recorders, as covered in the SB 1130 veto, so Apple's chime is its own design choice.

Apple says server-based Apple Intelligence features, Live Rewind and Siri Recap among them, are subject to daily usage limits, and that expanded access will be available for a fee in the future, without saying what that fee will be.

A heart rate reading every five seconds

7.6/10Good

Apple rebuilt the sensor on the back, and the heart rate complication now updates every five seconds, 60 times as often as on the Series 11, according to Tom's Guide. The Heart Rate app shows a rolling two-minute chart, and HRV, including overnight and recovery readings, is easier to reach from the wrist. Its reviewer ran with a Garmin chest strap for comparison and found the watch close to the strap on the runs shown.

The new Readiness score, a rating out of ten with one of four recommendations, is exclusive to the Series 12 and Ultra 4. It needs seven nights of wear with at least four hours of sleep before it appears, and the Readiness tab in the iPhone's Health app arrives with iOS 27.2, Macworld notes.

Hypertension notifications are listed on the spec sheet, but Apple excludes people under 22, anyone already diagnosed with hypertension and pregnant people, and the feature is still waiting for clearance in many regions, as covered in the regional rollout of hypertension alerts. The Blood Oxygen app remains a wellness feature, not a medical one, by Apple's own wording.

Battery: Apple's 24 hours against two-day tests

6.8/10Fair

Apple's 24-hour rating assumes 300 time checks, 90 notifications, 15 minutes of apps, an hour-long workout with music and six hours of sleep tracking, with the watch connected to an iPhone the whole time. Low Power Mode is rated at 38 hours, and a GPS workout at up to 10 hours, two more than the Series 11 by Tom's Guide's count.

Macworld's two cycles lasted 51 hours and about 40 hours, an average of 45.5 against 47.5 for its Series 11, and the reviewer called the new watch less consistent. Charging fell short of Apple's claim of 80 percent in about 30 minutes: Macworld reached 58 and 72 percent in that time, and a colleague at Macwelt reached 62. Full charges took 82 and 63 minutes.

In practice that is a charge every night or every other night, depending on how much the screen and workouts are used.

Resets, watchOS 27.0.1 and the Series 11 question

Macworld's watch reset itself three times in one day and sometimes felt slow to respond. Apple has since released watchOS 27.0.1 to fix random reboots on the Series 12 and Ultra 4, Notebookcheck reports, so check that update first if a new watch restarts on its own. Notebookcheck also reported a small number of owners describing skin irritation, and Apple Support advises them to stop wearing the watch, in many cases with a free return.

The body is the Series 11's: 9.7 mm thick, 32.2 grams for the 42 mm aluminum GPS model, water resistant to 50 meters and rated IP6X for dust.

iPhone in Canada's advice is that Series 11 owners can comfortably skip this generation and that the upgrade grows from a Series 8, 9 or older.

Score breakdown

Scores run from 1.0 to 10.0: 9+ exceptional, 8–8.9 excellent, 7–7.9 good, 6–6.9 fair, 5–5.9 mediocre, below 5 poor. The overall score is the weighted average of the rated sections. Unrated sections do not count.

Pros

  • Heart rate every five seconds
  • Readiness score from overnight vitals, sleep and training load
  • Works with phones back to the iPhone 11, so the sensor and Readiness need no new phone
  • Low Power Mode lasts well past a day, by Apple's rating

Cons

  • Live Rewind and Siri Recap need an iPhone 16 or later and are still a beta
  • Fast charging fell well short of Apple's claim in Macworld's timed tests
  • Early units reset themselves until watchOS 27.0.1
  • Same body and 24-hour rating as the Series 11
  • Apple plans a fee for expanded Apple Intelligence use

Conclusion

Apple left the outside of the Series 11 alone and put the change on the back and inside: a sensor that samples heart rate all day, a Readiness score built on it, and a microphone for features that have not shipped. Macworld's battery cycles ran past two days of its usage, while the fast charge and the first weeks of software were rougher than Apple's page suggests.

The microphone's main features belong to iPhone 16 owners, and the rest of the watch belongs to anyone with an iPhone 11 or newer.

Andreea-Viviana Jitaru’s take

The heart sensor is the one change on the Series 12 that every owner gets on day one, whatever the phone. I think that makes it a good buy from an older watch and a hard one to justify over a Series 11, because the features Apple spent its keynote on have not arrived yet.

Buy it if
  • Owners of a Series 8 or older who use an iPhone
  • Runners who want workout heart rate close to a chest strap without wearing one
Consider an alternative if
  • You already wear a Series 11
  • Live Rewind is the reason to buy and your iPhone is older than an iPhone 16
  • You use an Android phone, which the watch does not support

About the reviewer

Editor

Andreea edits the written side of the site: the articles and the reviews. Her brief is to say what a feature list cannot, where a device is genuinely good, where it quietly compromises, and who should walk past it. A review that reads like marketing copy, or that praises a device without naming a drawback, does not go live.

This is a research-based assessment: the reviewer compiled it from published specifications, documentation and independent measurements rather than from testing the unit.
