Is the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 Still Worth Buying After Gen 3?

One hour of battery, one more microphone and a programmable button separate the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer (Gen 2) from the Gen 3 that Meta launched on September 23, 2026. The camera is the same 12 MP sensor recording 3K video, and Meta still sells the Gen 2 for less.

That makes the Gen 2 the cheaper way into the same photos and video. Its closest rival at a similar price is the Oakley Meta HSTN, a sportier frame with the same camera. The specifications here come from Meta's US store page for the Gen 2 and its September announcement of the Gen 3.

Quick verdict

Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer (Gen 2), Matte Black frame, Clear lenses, Standard fit
7.0/10
Editorial ratingGoodWeighted average of 4 rated sections.

The Gen 2 keeps the Gen 3's camera and gives up an hour of battery and a programmable button, for less money. For someone buying Meta's glasses mostly for photos, video and calls, that is the better trade.

Strengths

  • Same 12 MP camera and 3K video as the Gen 3
  • Fits the Gen 1 charging case and cables, so an old spare case still works
  • Wide prescription range

Weaknesses

  • No action button
  • An hour less battery than the Gen 3, on Meta's ratings
  • No USB-C cable in the box

How we reviewed it

Basis
Research-based: assessed from the manufacturer’s published specifications, documentation and the independent sources listed at the end. We have not tested this unit ourselves; any measurement quoted belongs to the cited source.
Method

Battery, weight, camera, storage, phone requirements, prescription range and warranty come from the specification list and FAQ on Meta's US store page for the Gen 2. What the Gen 3 changes comes from Meta's Connect announcement of September 23, 2026. The recharge count and the minutes of video are our arithmetic on Meta's figures.

Evidence

Meta's US store page for the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer (Gen 2) and Meta's announcement of the Gen 3.

Limitations

We have no independent measurement of the battery, the microphones or the camera, so those figures are Meta's. Meta doesn't say how long it will keep updating the Gen 2 now that the Gen 3 is on sale.

What the Gen 3 adds for the extra money

7.4/10Good

Meta's announcement lists what the Gen 3 changes: a slimmer frame, one more hour of battery, adjustable temple tips, a sixth microphone and an action button. The button opens Meta AI, or another feature you choose, with one tap. The camera and video stay where they were, a 12 MP sensor recording up to 3K at 30 frames per second.

Meta makes nearly the same background-noise claim for the Gen 2's five microphones on calls as for the Gen 3's six, so the extra microphone is a small change.

That leaves battery, the button and the frame as the reasons to pay more. Someone who mainly wants hands-free photos, calls and music gets the same ground covered by the Gen 2. A listener who never wanted a camera on their face has a third choice in the audio-only Ray-Ban Meta Audio, which Meta launched the same day.

Eight hours, and a case that refills it six times

6.8/10Fair

Meta rates the Gen 2 at up to 8 hours a charge. Standby runs to 19 hours, and the case holds another 48, which by our arithmetic is six full refills of the glasses. Twenty minutes in the case gets them back to half. The Gen 3 gets an hour more, with 50 hours in its case.

The Gen 2 takes the Gen 1's charging case and cables, so a Gen 1 owner's spare case still fits. No USB-C cable comes in the box.

Phones, the Meta AI app and storage

The glasses run through the Meta AI app on an iPhone with iOS 15.2 or later, or an Android phone on Android 10 or later. They pair over Bluetooth 5.3 and use Wi-Fi 6 to move photos and video to the phone. Meta sells the Gen 2 in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Japan and several EU countries, and its live translation works between 20 languages.

The 32 GB of storage holds more than 1,000 photos. In video it fits more than 100 thirty-second clips, and a hundred clips of that length is about 50 minutes of video, so a day of filming means importing to the phone before the next one.

Since September, a visual data storage switch in the app stops Meta keeping what the glasses see when you ask Meta AI about it.

Weight, prescriptions and the capture light

The Standard frame weighs 51 g and the Large 53 g, against 43 g for the camera-free Ray-Ban Meta Audio that Meta launched alongside the Gen 3. Both sizes take prescriptions from -12.00 to +6.00, including progressives. Meta designs them for ages 13 and up.

A built-in LED lights up when the glasses take photos or video, as on every generation. EssilorLuxottica's warranty runs 12 months in Meta's specification list, and one or two years depending on the country in its FAQ. Returns through Meta run 30 days from shipping.

Score breakdown

Scores run from 1.0 to 10.0: 9+ exceptional, 8–8.9 excellent, 7–7.9 good, 6–6.9 fair, 5–5.9 mediocre, below 5 poor. The overall score is the weighted average of the rated sections. Unrated sections do not count.

Pros

  • Same 12 MP camera and 3K video as the Gen 3
  • Fits the Gen 1 charging case and cables, so an old spare case still works
  • Wide prescription range
  • Works with iPhone and Android

Cons

  • No action button
  • An hour less battery than the Gen 3, on Meta's ratings
  • No USB-C cable in the box

Conclusion

On Meta's figures the Gen 2 and Gen 3 take the same photos and video, and the newer pair adds an hour of battery, a programmable button, a sixth microphone and a slimmer frame.

At the lower price, the Gen 2 is a sound way into Meta's camera glasses, with the same phone support and prescription range. Meta still lists it on its store, with a link to the Gen 3 for newer styles.

Andreea-Viviana Jitaru’s take

Nothing Meta lists for the Gen 3 changes the photos or the video, so I'd spend the difference on prescription lenses for the Gen 2.

Best for
  • Buyers who want Meta's camera glasses at the lower price
  • Gen 1 owners with a spare charging case
  • Prescription wearers
Consider an alternative if
  • You want the action button or the slimmer Gen 3 frame
  • You'd rather not wear a camera at all

About the reviewer

Editor

Andreea edits the written side of the site: the articles and the reviews. Her brief is to say what a feature list cannot, where a device is genuinely good, where it quietly compromises, and who should walk past it. A review that reads like marketing copy, or that praises a device without naming a drawback, does not go live.

This is a research-based assessment: the reviewer compiled it from published specifications, documentation and independent measurements rather than from testing the unit.
